A magyar író, költő és műfordító pályafutása 1898 és 1900 kezdődött színművek, kalandos történtekek, versek és mesék írásával. 1907-től kezdve folyamatosan jelentek meg írásai, de az igazi áttörés 5 év múlva érkezett el, ekkor jelent meg az Így írtok ti című paródiakötete.
1935-en Baumgartner-díjjal tüntették ki. Egy évvel később agydaganattal műtötték, a betegsége alatti tapasztalataiból, élményeiből született az Utazás a koponyám körül című műve.
Karinthy nevét a nagyközönség elsősorban irodalmi karikatúráiról ismeri, pedig nagyon sok műfajban alkotott maradandót: több mint 5 ezer cikket írt különböző újságokba a riporttól kezdve az irodalmi elemzéseken át a filozófiai eszmefuttatásokig.
